The palettes and descriptions were listed in the jzIntv source code, and provided here for easy viewing and reference. Note that the built-in jzIntv default color palette sets can actually be invoked with undocumented command line parameters, WITHOUT having to use an external palette configuration file. Also note that the "Primary Palette Color Set" and "Pastel Palette Color Set" color descriptions below (e.g "; Brown") are as they are listed in the Mattel Electronics Intellivision Model 2609 Console Service Manual. Included are external palette configuration files for each of the palettes (invoked by "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=FILENAME_OF_PALETTE_FILE.CFG"), 16 color "GIF" format images of the splash screens of "Astrosmash" using each of the palettes, as well a 16 color "BMP" format images of the palettes. Also included are the Intellivision console color palette notes and descriptions by Stephen Roney (the head of software development for Intellivision Productions). Also included is the color palette that was used for the freeware Intellivision "Intellipack" (Windows) and "Intellivision for PC" (DOS) downloads. Note that this palette needs to be invoked using the included external palette configuration file ("jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=Intellipack_Color_Palette.cfg"). Also included is the custom color palette that was included with the Windows version of jzIntvImGui v2.3.7, as well as the jzIntvImGui v2.3.7 Android app. Note that this palette needs to be invoked using the included external palette configuration file ("jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntvImGui_Custom_Palette.cfg"). Lastly, also included is the Windows utility "Pixie Color Picker v4.1", which is handy for viewing and picking colors for jzIntv color palettes. jzIntv Default NTSC Color Palette (DEFAULT_NTSC) ------------------------------------------------ The default STIC palette on NTSC machines when running jzIntv with no palette command line parameters. This is a compromise NTSC palette derived with the assistance of screen capturing with a capture card, and eyeballing the screen. It's somewhat better in practice so far, as NTSC has some out-of-gamut colors that are difficult to reproduce faithfully on computer displays. JzIntv Command Lines: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=default_ntsc" "jzIntv.exe" by itself (with no "--gfx-palette=default_ntsc" command line) "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntv_Default_NTSC_Color_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #1438F7 ; Blue #E35B0E ; Red #CBF168 ; Tan #009428 ; Dark Green #07C200 ; Light Green #FFFF01 ; Yellow #FFFFFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #C8C8C8 ; Gray #23CEC3 ; Cyan #FD9918 ; Orange #3A8A00 ; Brown #F0463C ; Magenta #D383FF ; Light Blue #48F601 ; Yellow-Green #B81178 ; Purple jzIntv Default PAL Color Palette (DEFAULT_PAL) ---------------------------------------------- The default STIC palette on PAL machines. This is the palette used in "PAL" mode, derived with the help of "Oscar Toledo G." (https://nanochess.org/mr_chess.html). JzIntv Command Lines: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=default_pal" "jzIntv.exe --pal" "jzIntv.exe -P" "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntv_Default_PAL_Color_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #0075FF ; Blue #FF4C39 ; Red #D1B951 ; Tan #09B900 ; Dark Green #30DF10 ; Light Green #FFE501 ; Yellow #FFFFFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #8C8C8C ; Gray #28E5C0 ; Cyan #FFA02E ; Orange #646700 ; Brown #FF29FF ; Magenta #8C8FFF ; Light Blue #7CED00 ; Yellow-Green #C42BFC ; Purple jzIntv Old 1 Color Palette (JZINTV_OLD_1) ----------------------------------------- An old jzIntv (pre-2018) jzIntv palette. I generated these colors by directly eyeballing my television while it was next to my computer monitor. I then tweaked each color until it was pretty close to my TV. Bear in mind that NTSC (said to mean "Never The Same Color") is highly susceptible to Tint/Brightness/Contrast settings, so your mileage may vary with this particular palette configuration. JzIntv Command Lines: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzintv_old_1" "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntv_Old_1_Color_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #002DFF ; Blue #FF3D10 ; Red #C9CFAB ; Tan #386B3F ; Dark Green #00A756 ; Light Green #FAEA50 ; Yellow #FFFCFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #BDACC8 ; Gray #24B8FF ; Cyan #FFB41F ; Orange #546E00 ; Brown #FF4E57 ; Magenta #A496FF ; Light Blue #75CC80 ; Yellow-Green #B51A58 ; Purple jzIntv Old 2 Color Palette (JZINTV_OLD_2) ----------------------------------------- An even older jzIntv (pre-20??) jzIntv palette. JzIntv Command Lines: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzintv_old_2" "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntv_Old_2_Color_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #0016FE ; Blue #FE5A02 ; Red #C0D863 ; Tan #00B700 ; Dark Green #00E618 ; Light Green #F0FF56 ; Yellow #FDFDFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #BFC3CA ; Gray #00C8F0 ; Cyan #FCCA23 ; Orange #208000 ; Brown #FF5EA8 ; Magenta #A090FF ; Light Blue #90FF60 ; Yellow-Green #C0107A ; Purple Intellipack Color Palette ("Intellipack_Color_Palette.cfg") ----------------------------------------------------------- This is the color palette that was used for the freeware Intellivision "Intellipack" (Windows) and "Intellivision for PC" (DOS) downloads. JzIntv Command Line: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=Intellipack_Color_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #0000DF ; Blue #EB0000 ; Red #C3D375 ; Tan #048600 ; Dark Green #00B200 ; Light Green #FFE318 ; Yellow #FFFFFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #AAAAAA ; Gray #55BECF ; Cyan #FF8E0C ; Orange #346128 ; Brown #FF5555 ; Magenta #9A9EFF ; Light Blue #55D300 ; Yellow-Green #CB1451 ; Purple jzIntvImGui v2.3.7 Custom Color Palette ("jzIntvImGui_Custom_Palette.cfg") -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a custom color palette file ("Palette_File.cfg") that was included with jzIntvImGui v2.3.7 (https://github.com/jenergy/jzIntvImGui). JzIntv Command Line: "jzIntv.exe --gfx-palette=jzIntvImGui_Custom_Palette.cfg" Primary Palette Color Set: #000000 ; Black #002DFF ; Blue #FF3D0F ; Red #CECE94 ; Tan #1E4912 ; Dark Green #01812E ; Light Green #F7E64A ; Yellow #FFFFFF ; White Pastel Palette Color Set: #A5ADA5 ; Gray #51B7E5 ; Cyan #EF9C00 ; Orange #536D00 ; Brown #FF3173 ; Magenta #9A8AEF ; Light Blue #4AA552 ; Yellow-Green #950457 ; Purple Intellivision 16 Color Palette Notes ------------------------------------ The following are notes about the 16 color palette on the Intellivision (by Stephen Roney, co-programmer of "Space Spartans" and "B-17 Bomber", and head of software development for Intellivision Productions): The Intellivision can generate 16 colors - 8 "primaries" (black, blue, red, tan, dark green, green, yellow, and white) and 8 "pastels" (gray, cyan, orange, brown, magenta, light blue, yellow-green, and purple). There are limitations on when the pastels can be used. For example, lower case letters can't be displayed in pastel colors without some programming trickery. Despite their classification, most of the "pastels" aren't really pastel. In November 1980, Astrosmash programmer John Sohl (nicknamed "Dr. Sohl", because his methodical notes on his early work with Intellivision became valuable documentation for later programmers) described the 16 colors in a rather eccentric (almost poetic) manner: BLACK: True. BLUE: Not quite dark blue PC board, closer to '65 Cadillac than '66 Falcon, lapis lazuli (a deep blue metamorphic rock). RED: Red shirt red, much lighter than a rose, slightly purple? TAN: Sandy, almost light brown. DARK GREEN: Very dark - climbing-ivy dark, or rubber-tree dark. GREEN: Same shade but lighter, perhaps grass green, touch of yellow. YELLOW: Dark yellow - "Afrika Korps" yellow, definitely not marigold. Not quite amber. WHITE: True. GRAY: With a tinge of purple. CYAN: Sick green-blue, institutional washroom green-blue. ORANGE: Pale, closer to light red than to true Halloween orange. BROWN: Very dark, the color of wet topsoil. MAGENTA: Very bright, garish pink with a tinge of purple. LIGHT BLUE: The color of the California sky looking up at 45 degrees. Perhaps a pastel color. YELLOW-GREEN: The same shade (of green) again, but somewhat more faded. The grass of August? A true pastel green. PURPLE: Dark violet Easter-egg dye purple. Because the Intellivision output is analog (subject to noise and component variations), and because televisions (particularly early 1980s televisions) vary in their color and tint adjustments, players see slightly different colors from console to console and TV set to TV set. For instance, brown appears greenish on many sets. In developing the emulation software for our Intellipacks and CD-ROM collections, the programmers were given leeway to recreate the colors as they see them on their own TVs with a real Intellivision. The result is that the emulators for DOS, Mac, Windows and PlayStation all have slightly different palettes. Which is correct? The only "correct" colors are the ones that make you feel as if you are playing your Intellivision on your living room TV set at home in 1982. We hope we've achieved that. By the way, if you're wondering what "Afrika Korps" yellow is: John Sohl says, "It helps if you watched 'The Rat Patrol (in color)' when you were 13 years old."
